The Flying Solo series is a respected, rotating art exhibit that offers art organizations and gifted artists an opportunity to exhibit their work at BNA each season. The Summer 2023 exhibit, which is open now through October 22, 2023, is a part of BNA’s Arts at the Airport program.
Created in 1988, BNA’s Arts at the Airport is an ever-growing, ever-changing showcase of cultural diversity and creative talent in Tennessee. Debra Lovvorn Belvin is an artist whose work has received awards in both regional and national exhibitions. She began her career and art studies majoring in Visual Design at Auburn University. When Belvin realized teaching was her calling, she transferred to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where she received a Bachelor of Science in Art Education. Belvin began her teaching career in Hamilton County and retired 37-years later in Knox County. In 2001, she was named Tennessee Art Educator of the Year.
In 1984, Debra received a Lyndhurst Grant which allowed her to do painting studies aboard and at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg. This summer research was part of Belvin’s continuing education that occurred over a 40-year span at Arrowmont where she twice served as a studio assistant. Her passion is interpreting the Smokey Mountain Landscape through various mediums – particularly paint. This work has been displayed in one-man shows at the Hunter Museum of Art Regional Gallery, Chattanooga Mayor’s Office, Townsend Gallery of the Knoxville Arts Council, and various local libraries. Additionally, her artwork is part of the collection in the Opryland Hotel in Nashville and Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga. Marla Faith finds scraps and tears up her art, which she then upcycles and remarries into new mixed media collages. Using both visual texture and actual textures, she intuitively moves shapes around, looking for a dynamic harmony. Paints, crayons, oil pastels, colored pencil, found objects, beads, buttons, seashells and feathers all add to create a balanced composition where colors and images dance together.
